@MischievousTomato @coolboymew This used to be true with EdgeHTML Edge, but now it's just Chromium with a few tunables set so realistically I don't think it should make a huge difference (maybe shelling out to WebView2 which is always running old IE style? Funny how history repeats itself in that way)

@netdoll @coolboymew I'm not sure, but even after edgehtml i've heard people say that Edge is still more efficient. lemme chuecc

@MischievousTomato @coolboymew Like infamously back in the Windows 98 days Microsoft shelled out to iexplore.exe for a whole bunch of things with the shell so that they could claim that IE was "more efficient" than Netscape and integration with the operating system was necessary, and I think a similar situation is happening now with WebView2 being used to implement a bunch of user facing stuff on Windows 11 including large parts of the shell, then claiming that Edge is more efficient because it just is, carefully concealing the fact that now you're running two browser engines instead of one at once if you're using a competitors product. As much as some people might like to believe it, you can't really teach an old dog new tricks.

@netdoll @MischievousTomato the Netscape stuff is exactly why I'm confused as to how M$ is able to get away with all this shit

@coolboymew @MischievousTomato Because the consent decree expired and because to some extent all their competitors are doing it now too, especially with the adoption push for things like Electron and PWAs.

@netdoll @coolboymew Well more or less, but i dont see how electron could be integrated into an OS beyond linux or chromeOS. And hell under both multiple electron versions are used.

@MischievousTomato @coolboymew No, but things like "I'm just going to write my entire shell and applications on top of a browser engine using webshit", it's becoming a big trend. Google already does it with ChromeOS, many Linux vendors do it out of expedience, and while Apple emphasizes native APIs over webshit for their platforms, they deeply integrate WebKit with the underlying operating system and otherwise pull many of the same tricks the other vendors do in order to keep their moat intact.

@netdoll @coolboymew if it ends up being nice for the end user ig that's fine. Apple seems to do it the best I'd say.
ChromeOS... I'd never touch. On Linux, well, Gnome Web just needs to stop having laggy scrolling in some pages and have actually working hw video decode and it'd replace firefox for me

@MischievousTomato @dushman @coolboymew Gonna go out on a limb here and say that GNOME Wayland is actually very pleasant to use now, especially with Gamescope being a thing that exists. Only a few real UX gripes but they're all too minor to note here

The layout is a personal preference thing but GNOME's code is horrible

@dushman @MischievousTomato @coolboymew Yeah the layout is the main draw imo, makes keyboard control very pleasant. I'll probably switch back to KDE in a few versions but Wayland is non-negotiable for me.

@dushman @MischievousTomato @coolboymew (if I stuck with X11, there's a good chance I'd be using Window Maker now)

@dushman @MischievousTomato @coolboymew I got stockholmed into using it for a few years because lol NVIDIA and it's actually very comfy UX-wise, probably my favorite desktop experience period. Only reason I abandoned it is because gamescope is a must for me now.

@dushman @netdoll @coolboymew touchpads are nice. There was a time I played half life mp with friends and I was the only one that use a touchpad and slayed.

@MischievousTomato @dushman @coolboymew I don't count human insects who sit in front of their computers all day playing War Thunder and printing off hundreds of pics of their AI-generated anime waifus as having functional brains.

@MischievousTomato @dushman @coolboymew Most working scientists have a variety of reasons why they hate NVIDIA, and doubly so for anyone who has to interact with them too closely. There's a reason shareholders are panicking now that AMD is starting to corner the TOP500 deployments and Intel is starting to deploy competitive products, along with TPUs eating the bottom out from them in the AI/ML market.

@netdoll @dushman @coolboymew ok, noted! That's nice and sobering to hear then. Idk about AMD beyond their driver mess, but I have more hopes in Intel bc i'm a fanboy lol
