Man, I hate USB sticks so, so much.

Extremely unreliable both for long term storage and for frequent write access. There is literally nothing good about them. Except maybe the form factor.

@sigmasternchen not gonna lie, USB flash drives are shit, but for passing files around, the get the job done. Also SD cards are equally shit.

@getimiskon@fedi.getimiskon.xyz Yep. I specifically bought a USB stick sized SSD for my emergency backup (password manager file, recovery keys, important documents, ...) because I just can't rely on anything else... Especially when it's encrypted - one bad bit flip and everything is lost.

@sigmasternchen I guess the best thing to do is to check the files there once in a while, to see if they are readable.

@getimiskon@fedi.getimiskon.xyz Yeah, but I really don't want to deal with this. It's my emergency driver after all - I only use it once everything else failed.

@sigmasternchen I mean, checking these files once every few months wouldn't be that big of a deal.

@getimiskon@fedi.getimiskon.xyz It kind of is. This drive should ideally be off-site. If my house burns down, and all my important documents and files are gone, the backup should still be there.
Unfortunately there is no better solution than checking. At least I use a proper SSD so it's way less likely that something happens.

@sigmasternchen yeah... to be honest, I would consider getting an SSD for that. And SSDs aren't even that expensive anymore.
