@Amelia @rose you're both making it look like you live in parallel universes neocat_shocked

the thing is, I like linux, I wish i could use it, but every time ive tried it's taken hours and hours of fiddling to work, and then small but annoying problems crop up that take hours too. Im sure if i learned it it would be amazing, but i get the feeling that that time investment would never go away

@rose hmm
Well, to my experience the reason most people abandon linux is because of their starting point - they either choose Ubuntu because they hear it’s a “solid base” or Arch because of all the memes about it which are both honestly worst picks possible (and yes, Arch is good and in no way comparable to Ubuntu, but only if you have a lot of experience with Linux as a whole)

I’d recommend using Pop OS as a first choice linux, and don’t replace Windows with it right away! Most linux installers have an option to automatically set up dual boot, please use it.

And if you do have any issues, don’t hesitate to ask, especially here ElainaHeart

@witix in my opinion, Linux Mint is generally a solid option for new Linux users. I haven't used PopOS before, but considering it ships by default on System76 machines, it can also be good for that case.

@witix when i tried it was with kubuntu cuz yeah ubuntu felt like a good choice since i would figure it probably has the most docs and stack overflow help pages if something goes wrong, and also my main gripes woth windows is that its ugly, not very customizable, and has no good terminal (bash emus like wsl aren't great for most applications, so youre kinda shit outta luck if you want a good shell)

any linux distro solves the last problem and the kde is pretty and customizable, so it solves the first two.

pop looks good though, idk, and yeah every time ive done dual booting

@rose I guess if you want KDE then maybe Garuda Linux wouldn’t be such a bad choice? It’s main iso is KDE-centric and the default configs are, uh… okay-ish, but there’s some downsides I should note:

  1. It is a full rolling release and thus, updates may be a bit unstable, and (which was the main reason for me switching away from it) big. Like, “3GB each update” kind of big
  2. It’s a tiny bit bloated, not in the same way as Windows tho - there’ll be no cortana popups and stuff, just that there’s a lot of apps preinstalled
    2.1 It’s dedicated for “gamers”, so expect Steam and Wine to be preinstalled. On the bright side of it, there’s a lot of performance patches!
  3. I’m not sure about the maintaining state of the OS - I’ve used it for about 9 months in a row and there’s been no notice of deprecation whatsoever, but Garuda’s repos are still maintained by a small group of people, and you know those tend to drift apart just a little bit sometimes, heh aqua_smug

@rose or I suppose if you want to base your pick on a wider sample of people - I heard from a lot of people that Fedora "just works", and it also has a KDE spin so there's always that option :3
