You know? If everyone who gets triggered by something asked for that thing to have a CW the whole internet would be posts with a CW.
Wanna share a pic of your pet spider? You're triggering people with arachnophobia.
A beautiful picture of the ocean? Thalassophobia.
Pet snake? Herpetophobia.
There's a phobia for anything, hell there's a phobia for long words and, ironically, it's name is a long ass word.
I have a phobia too and I asked only a few friends who post things that spook me to CW those, but I'm not asking the whole internet.

I understand wanting to browse without dealing with stressful/spooky shit, but we can't expect everyone to put a CW on literally everything just in case.

We just need a new system we can use filters with so that we can curate our own timeline removing shit we dont wanna see and just leave content warnings for spoilers.

@raccoon The CW system on here is more or less a replacement for the tumblr tagging system people used CWs for on that platform. People cant really block tags unless people put hashtags in all related posts and CWs are a good way to make sure people dont see content that tends to be more affiliated with traumatic experiences

CWs are also used on here as a way to let people ignore topics or longer posts that might not be interesting to them, or to add a title to a post that requires that context

@chalkllate@wolfdo.gg
It's not a replacement for that because CW were on fedi before the wave of twitter and tumblr users came.
It's also very much possible to put hashtags on posts and each user can put those on filters they can use to exclude them to prevent them from showing.
If instead of putting so much effort into selfishly asking people to put a CW on the one thing we are triggered by we tried to spread the healthy habit of tagging stuff everyone would benefit from it.

@raccoon I think content warnings have their reason to exist for a bunch of stuff, like NSFW posts, some political discussions etc. But in some cases it goes too far. For example, adding a CW for mundane things like food just don't make sense. Hell, even eye contact CWs don't make sense to me as a neurodivergent person who has issues with that.

Also that reminds me of the push to add alt text to everything. Sure, for public stuff it's generally a good thing if you can do it, but not everyone wants to do it, or even can do it. Also you might NOT want to add alt text on some file. Nobody should force someone to do stuff like that.

@raccoon I dont see overused CWs on fedi at all tbh, most of the CW-ed stuff is NSFW and kink and thats because those are things that rightfully need them with how prevalent SA is and how minors exist on these platforms who would require that filter anyway

@chalkllate@wolfdo.gg and yeah I don't see it being overused either but I see people asking from time to time to cw some stuff.
"Please put a CW on thing"
Mostly they get ignored I guess, which is yet another reason why we should find a better way

Sometimes the alt text is so fucking verbose that it blocks the view on part of the picture, we're going full circle.

@raccoon yeah, it happens. Sometimes when I add alt text to a file, it can get a bit too verbose. Also for audio, I don't think alt text is supposed to be a place to write a track's lyrics.

And yeah CW have a reason to exist, I just think we're starting to misuse them.

@raccoon This is one of those things that AI would actually be a good solution for. Have a computer read the post and decide whether or not you would personally want to see a content warning for it.

You're not the first to tell me this, you're not wrong but I think it would take a toll on the servers of small instances.

@raccoon Exactly. In my opinion, if you don't like what's being written in a post, don't read it. If you see a bunch of posts about something you don't want to see, you can hide them. That's how it works.

Yeah I remember.
Man I'm repetitive, I didn't remember whining about this before, I'm turning into my dad but only in the bad things without the good.

Yes and no. Again think about phobias and pictures.
My phobia is severe, if I see the thing on my screen I have to look away and blindly figure out how to hide it or call my wife.

@raccoon never mind the instance, it can run on whatever device said person is browsing with. Put the burden on those that want to use it.

@raccoon well, I had text posts in mind in that reply, but about pictures, it really depends on the picture, I guess. Sure, we should keep in mind that some people might have phobias, but unless it's a fairly common one, people might not CW a picture. Sometimes it seems like a hit or miss situation.

@raccoon @getimiskon there was whole discussion about CW in the old days. I and many other people contended that just tagging your content is superior in every way to CWs. there was also the issue that Mastodon repurposed a different field meant for different purpose as a CW field, with complete lack of consideration for any other piece of software but Mastodon that used OStatus activitystream notes. Or actually negative consideration since it was brought up and done anyway.

@raccoon Content warnings over Gore and talks of Sexual abuse and everything on that end is fine.

This I agree whole heartedly, It's fucking stupid to have CWs over mundane shit. I tend to be afraid of the undersea ocean but I embrace that shit, I'm not gonna be a special one around and try to have it be blocked with a CW over how I feel about it.

@anonicus@shitposter.world
Yeah pretty much. I can't be expected to CW pictures of bottles because someone I don't even know might find them spooky.
I will, however, put a CW on anything a friend asks me to.

I absolutely agree. Tags would solve everything here and mastodon fucking sucks.

@raccoon @getimiskon I still have some negativity because of many early interactions from years ago (which I admit is pathetic of me) but now I just think that Mastodon is too constrained for the potential of activitypub and its direction too constrained by a really uninteresting vision. Everything interesting is happening elsewhere.

It's not pathetic, it's OK, we all get peeved by some stuff, dont be harsh on yourself :)
You're a great guy my friend, I think you can forgive yourself a few pet peeves.

@raccoon @sun @getimiskon you still wouldn't know what to tag though

...so i think people should be allowed to add tags onto posts by people who follow them

@raccoon @getimiskon @sun fwiw i'd still like to have some kind of voluntary poster-side "click here to see the rest of the post / the attached image" function for things like porn or giant layout-breaking MFM or something

@raccoon I personally just like needed content cw'd and actual spoilers for movies. Otherwise i am fine with everything else.
I also get politics but 🤷
