you'd think that since macOS is the only mainstream operating system that's a certified UNIX system, it'd the most technical system out there for only the most nerdy users, but nope, this is the operating system where you drag a file from a folder you downloaded on the internet to the apps folder to install your programs

@mjdxp I miss the days when Apple leaned into the unixness of their computers.

also i love how completely pointless a UNIX certification is. being UNIX certified doesn't mean your system is based on UNIX anymore or that it can run UNIX software, it's just if you pay money to this corporation you get to call your operating system UNIX

case in point, a couple of linux distros were certified UNIX systems for a while until their subscription ran out and they didn't want to pay

then again, it comes with pico instead of nano because apple hates the GPL, so i guess it's more like UNIX in some ways than others

nah, the real place where the nerds hang out is the free bootleg UNIX that some random dude made in the 90's

@Tijn it's funny how 90% of apple's userbase probably doesn't even know what UNIX is

@Tijn @mjdxp This sort of thing was weirdly why I bought my first white iBook, because I wanted a unix that had a working video card and sound card at the same time

@Tijn @mjdxp they used to brag about OS X's "industrial strength unix foundations" which I always found a rather dubious claim, but in the early days they actually used to release the core Darwin OS as a complete standalone & open source operating system which was really cool. It didn't include any of the higher level bits like the Aqua GUI and so on but you could run X11 and it would look mostly like any other Unix-style OS. There were even a couple of Darwin distros just like how there are Linux distros

@mjdxp macOS is a silly widdle (nyot) operating system. i prefer that from windows, honestly, but i still prefer Linux.
