@NeonPurpleStar i barely remembered the name. Anyways...
The thing is that either you try to host your data on a machine that you can control, or you're at the mercy of someone who can run that kind of service. That's how it works, unfortunately.

@NeonPurpleStar yeah... even having control of my own online service, doesn't mean i control much, because there are many layers that aren't under my control, like the machine i'm using, the internet provider etc. It's a mess and there's an increasing lack of trust that gets worse and worse, because of the way big platforms are being run. And that gets translated to a distrust of less-known services, even when those who run are honest on how the data of their users are handled.

@NeonPurpleStar i know, and i think i'm lucky to keep my stuff running for that long without many issues. The thing is that there are lots of like-minded people who for many reasons can't keep up. Depending on the services, hosting and maintaining them can be difficult, especially when it comes to social media, chatting services etc. Moderation is a challenging task that must be done, and not everyone can deal with it, especially on places where everyone can easily create an account. That's why i still don't completely open my services to the public. Because the cost and the work to maintain and moderate a service like that can be too much.

@NeonPurpleStar you know, you can technically make your outfit designs open source

@NeonPurpleStar also, you don't need to be a developer to contribute to open source software. Personally i have worked quite a bit on localization, but you can also improve stuff on the UI/UX of an application too, and that's something that there's a need for on foss projects.

@getimiskon i am actually reading some literature for that, but i am not taking it seriously enough to start a meaningful project

@NeonPurpleStar you don't need to take it seriously. Lots of projects haven't started as serious. See how Torvalds announced the first Linux kernel, for example.
Just try making it, and i'm pretty sure you'll learn a lot during that process.

@getimiskon i wanted to make a wayland window manager, but it's just too broad of a project

i can't handle another job of this scale

@NeonPurpleStar same, i actually wrote about it. And i know someone was interested to contribute on that as well. Unfortunately, my programming skills aren't that good either. I only got to the point of releasing a build of dwl with my own patches, and that's pretty much it.
Maybe i'll try messing with tinywl again and try to figure out how things work. But the lack of documentation isn't helpful.
