@anemone @meso @meso that’s not a train station, it’s a train stop, Europe has ones like this too on the minor stops

@arcana @anemone @meso yep, I lived next to one once. it had a short house next to it and you could buy tickets, as well as a lot of houses near it, and it was a bit bigger than that one but generally same function

@arcana@fedi.layer02.net @meso@the.asbestos.cafe @meso@netzsphaere.xyz this is what they're all like for all lines in the area. amtrak has a real station but it only goes between major cities, you can't use it to come in to town from the surrounding area

@anemone @arcana @meso why do you need a real station? you just need a place to buy a ticket and a place to get on a train. there's no real reason to have a big station other than in big urban areas with waiting times and lots of routes

@meso @anemone you should see Betws-y-Coed too. Cymru has some fine ass traditional rail lines

@meso@the.asbestos.cafe @arcana@fedi.layer02.net @meso@netzsphaere.xyz cause standing out in the rain next to a highway for 30 minutes waiting for the train kinda sucks

@anemone @meso @meso > Union Station connects to TriMet MAX Green and Yellow Line trains at the nearby Union Station/Northwest 6th & Hoyt Street and Union Station/Northwest 5th & Glisan Street stations, as well as local bus service provided by TriMet. Located at the northern end of TriMet's transit mall, Union Station is also only a short walk to both lines of the Portland Streetcar, in the Pearl District.

@anemone @meso @meso yeah but similar things exist in Europe too as big stations usually are for longer distance routes

@arcana@fedi.layer02.net @meso@the.asbestos.cafe @meso@netzsphaere.xyz when i was in spain there were proper stations for the trains connecting the suburbs to barcelona

@anemone @meso @arcana yeah because they're more densely populated. given most of these stations would be empty most of the time in America, no real point to having a building next to it

@anemone @meso @meso Portland metro area is about 2.5 million people, while the Barcelona one is 5 million people and one of the largest in Europe along with having over 7.5 million tourists per year pass through

@anemone we really need more mixed zoning tbh, its awful having the burbs being like how they currently are in the US

@arcana@fedi.layer02.net @disarray@fedi.layer02.net limited zoning rules based on noise and little else like japan is the answer. also ban all street parking

@anemone @disarray people should have drive ways and garages, and underground multi-storey car parks are better for vehicle safety so agreed

@arcana@fedi.layer02.net @disarray@fedi.layer02.net in japan you can't buy a car without proof you have somewhere to store it

@naaksit @anemone @arcana @disarray there should definitely be drivers licenses but they should be cheap

@naaksit @anemone @disarray driving licences in many cases are arbitrary and the enforced aspect should be based on dangerous and unsafe driving, as well as incentivising good driving with vehicle tax and insurance benefits.

Ensuring that you have somewhere to keep it indicates a level of fiscal responsibility that correlates with safer driving
1

@anemone @disarray @naaksit ever higher insurance premiums based on data gathering, toll road (and city road) usage that denies access to drivers who are above a certain danger score

@anemone @disarray @naaksit vehicle related tax relief for drivers shown to be safe and the inverse for those who are a danger or cause property damage

@anemone @disarray @naaksit it’s like in the UK, the driving test is very strict, very in-depth and requires two theory tests. It doesn’t stop young lads going through it and then rallying around a council estate in a souped up Corsa. Financial incentives and disincentives do a lot to curtail such behavior

@arcana @anemone @disarray @naaksit not having a drivers license is a massive handicap. not just in your daily life, but it also blocks you out of a lot of jobs. most wagie jobs here are part time, which means your income is gonna be around 1K or less. a drivers license costs ~3K-4K usually. cost of living is gonna be at the vey least if you're lucky ~ 600, usually more.
and then there's actually getting a car, maintenance, taxes, fuel etc. i know a LOT of rich kids who's parents paid for all of that and they regular get into accidents as the "financial incentive" doesn't apply to the rich, you're jusy handicapping the poor even more.

@lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @arcana@fedi.layer02.net @anemone@ebiverse.social @disarray@fedi.layer02.net @naaksit@fedi.layer02.net to add to this you're literally expected to experience a major accident within your first year behind the wheel. it's a statistically certain deal. this is why parents who know what they're doing and want their kid to actually lead a life of their own make sure they're driving before they hit 18.

@freon @disarray @anemone @lucy @naaksit @arcana don't know many people my age who've been responsible and gotten into a crash. only my dad and it was always because he went too fast on turns, drove drunk, or someone else was driving. he's bumped into a car while distracted like once through the last decade though, he's way more careful now.

@meso @anemone @disarray @naaksit @lucy @freon this isn’t true honestly, I’ve never known a single person get into a major vehicle collision in the UK and my family is full of drivers many who did it for work.

The only one was a minor one years ago where a boy racer bumped into my granddad’s bus

@arcana @anemone @disarray @naaksit @lucy @freon american thing probably. though given my dad's stories about car crashes I'd expect to get into one during my lifetime since they seem common, he has a scar on his face from one and something in his knee. he was also rescued from a crash by Ahmed Dogan who was coming back from a rally at the time, that's a fun fact about him

@lucy @anemone @disarray @naaksit you can make the penalties percentage based, and it also lowers the costs for lower class well behaved drivers if implemented fully because it would make it very cheap for good drivers (who may be poor), funded by those bad drivers among the rich population. Bad drivers subsidize the good drivers.

@arcana @anemone @disarray @naaksit @lucy I for one approve of this plan, only because I view financial penalties as simply the cost of doing business at very high speeds

this is also why I buy nice radar detectors and my next car will have laser jammers and directional detectors, because it should pay for itself over time

@meso @anemone @disarray @naaksit @lucy @freon tbf I’ve been in a car while a Bulgarian was driving and I can see why Bulgaria has the highest vehicle fatality rate in Europe

@freon @meso @disarray @anemone @naaksit @arcana okay ngl I've seen people drive in boston and, it's really something else. idk what's wrong with them. maybe a mandatory "public transport only day" would help people remind just HOW fucking slow commuting could be and they wouldn't mind driving a bit more careful

@lucy @anemone @arcana @disarray @naaksit @freon i went to greece and people there... fucking hell i thought bulgarian drivers were bad. these motherfuckers were going 100 in a city im pretty sure

@meso @anemone @disarray @naaksit @lucy @freon my Bulgarian friend did that. 110 mph in a 20. Almost hit a van driver who screamed out his window. Vasil’s response? “Haha, the English are so funny”

@arcana @anemone @disarray @naaksit @lucy @freon >180kmph
was driving with the instructor and the other instructees and one of the instructees said "Yo I went 180 on this stretch, press that throttle" and the instructor went "Dude I don't think I've even gotten this Golf to ever go up to 180, your dad certainly hasn't let you do that on this stretch"

@anemone @disarray @meso @freon @lucy @naaksit worldwide a lot of it is due to shitty third world countries that have absolutely insane roads and everybody is just crashing into each other constantly. Worldwide statistics are meaningless due to all of the factors that go into those.

In the UK in 2023, there were only 1,695 vehicle related deaths. With a population over 50 million.

@anemone @disarray @meso @freon @lucy @naaksit yes, a great deal of work is needed there too. I saw two meth heads in a subway when I was there. I’m surprised it’s tolerated.

@anemone @disarray @meso @freon @lucy @arcana i watched a doc about them and alot of them said they stopped going inside of traphouses or away from people because they wont die if they overdose because theres always people with narcan on standby.

@meso @anemone @arcana @disarray @naaksit @thegreatape @freon that's how they make money. they claim it's for safety but it's a business ultimately.

@anemone @disarray @meso @freon @lucy @naaksit @thegreatape there’s a small town in Texas I think where the highway speed suddenly drops a lot and they just wait there to catch people arbitrarily
1

@arcana @anemone @disarray @naaksit @thegreatape @freon @meso very common in germany. radio stations regularly inform about those and there's also apps that will notify you if you approach one, they tried to ban anyone doing this but failed but i was too young to remember why.
i only remember my mum being enraged about such warning systems cause she thinks breaking any law is inherently evil, avg german slave mindset imo.

@meso @anemone @arcana @disarray @naaksit @thegreatape @freon by default no, unless specified explicitly, and only on the autobahn. all other roads have restrictions.

@lucy @anemone @disarray @naaksit @thegreatape @freon @meso I think that’s what he meant, whether the autobahn had speed limits
1

0
@arcana @anemone @disarray @naaksit @thegreatape @freon @meso the average speed limit is 125km/h, while speed limits only apply to ~40% of the total distance. trucks always have a limit of 80km/h afaik. and there's conditional speed limits for aquaplaning situations.
