Not sure if anyone is rocking it. But if anything it'll be a good alt for my 'oldskool' subdomain since OpenNIC doesn't have root certificate chains to complete SSL correctly. You can self-sign and that's it.

http://www.s-config.geek - Tried for 'indy' but had a lot of DNS resolution issues.

@S-Config is this supposed to not resolve for me?
Nothin from Quad9, CF DNS, and Google's DNS.

@colinstu Accessing these domains requires a DNS change https://opennic.org/ talks about it. I should probably go into a lot more detail about OpenNIC.. especially why I think the project has stalled as a whole. Because although getting a domain is easy, requires no ID check.. you're limited to just their DNS servers.

@colinstu Current in its current state the only use I see for this project is for retro computing. Where perhaps DHCP is not a thing on certain 8-bit computer network adapters. you can plugin the DNS of OpenNIC and test website connectivity without having to spend a dime on ICANN

@S-Config oh, nice! A fellow OpenNIC domain owner. neocat_floof_happy

Although for some reason the domain doesn't work on the server i'm at.

@getimiskon Hmm... I did make it about 2 hours ago.. Not sure if DNS replication time takes longer. i'm using ns2.mo.us and ns2.ny.us and pinged right away on my Ubuntu and windows boxes.

@S-Config i see... as far as i know, it takes some time for your website to be available on other opennic nameservers (i have been using opennic for quite some time, so you can probably see mine on most servers)

@S-Config ah there ya go.
What's the expected workflow here usually?

Use exclusively opennic DNS for a browser or OS (or DNS server providing DNS to client)? Unbound isn't gonna be happy about misc extra DNS entries added, especially w/SSL/TLS enabled for my existing entries. Not supposed to mix all that.

I could manually add this resolved IP to hosts but that doesn't help me if the IP changes, I'd have to find out manually later it's down/changed and update later.

@colinstu The workflow is supposed to be two-fold. 1. direct to a DNS server away from your ISP or Google to 'supposedly' a private DNS server (so they claim! Again my cynicism is showing). 2. OpenNIC wants people to become their ICANN where you can set up a top-level domain and people register to it. OR a simpler solution (which I went for) is to get a domain on one of the existing top level services.

It's not much to look at.. but it functions better than crypto domains. If I had zero dollars and wanted to stage a website i'd probably use OpenNIC to test it.

@getimiskon All right, so hold off on writing the article until it takes the nameservers a while to replicate like it's 1990 internet. got it!

@S-Config oh, i just realized my wireless connections at home (i have separated 2.4 and 5 GHz bands) have a different DNS configuration and your website works fine on the DNS server i use for my 5 GHz one.
Whoops! neocat_googly_woozy

@getimiskon Oh! great news then! I thought the DNS replication was going super slow!

@S-Config some servers are probably slower to update than others

@S-Config sounds like it’s still ripe for possible sketchy activity? Why are they any more trustworthy than ICANN? And the barrier to entry of a few bucks a year isn’t even there.

Also LOL no way am I using ISP DNS (or google. Or even cloudflare). Quad9 seems like maybe the most “trustworthy” of them all so far.

@colinstu oh your not wrong on the sketch!! It's a lesson that is repeatable even on the clearnet with .tk offering free domains.. or Tor. Or I2P . Anything free will be fucked with. When you start thinking a program or protocol can solve a societal issue you end up sounding as insane as the cryptobros.

It's an experiment from my POV . Took nothing to deploy. So to me the worst that will happen is no hits. ;D
