its easy to kneejerk react by saying “grr ea bad” after they killed proton support for apex legends but we’re avoiding the real issue of eac and battleye being almost literally useless through proton

if we want this problem to go away we need epic or battleye to build an actual solution. sorry but we can’t rely on the goodwill of game developers allowing linux users to just play games with the anti-cheat effectively turned off

@nano quick question re this: lets say an anticheat dev did make a linux kernel module or something; wouldnt that have to be open sourced cuz of the gpl or am i stupid

(putting aside the hell of "how do you support like 70 different kernel configs" anyway)

@ezio no if its a module it doesnt need to be open source. only if its part of the kernel

@nano @ezio isnt that the whole reason the gplv3 exists. protecting against so called "gpl condoms" that nvidia is well known for

@nano The client-side security is equally broken on Linux and Windows, the latter is just explored more because the fight has been ongoing for longer.

There’s no actual solution with the current model possible here, except for later analyzing matches with something akin to Overwatch and other server side security. Most anticheats are just slapped onto the game, but that’s an unsuitable solution.

Especially now with AI based cheats that don’t even need to inject or read anything from the game except for a visual stream, client side security is broken.

@privateger @nano also theres no such thing as client side security. if it runs on the client, the users have will full control over it and there’s no way around that
