Isn't it tragic how simple internet searches have changed over the years. Now everything is about adverts and subscriptions and collecting personal data.
You follow a link to a little news item, but immediately find the page bouncing up and down loading adverts, covering the screen with cookie announcements, demanding you accept notifications, pushing a monthly subscription and doing everything but letting you read a couple of paragraphs of text.
Youtube likewise has become dire!

@oldrawgabbit Yep. It was created as a means of sharing information. In its early-ish days, it did a great job of doing that.

These days, it is all crapified, full of demands. I mean everything. It is becoming less and less useful each year.

I am glad I finished my research before it became so bad, as I used searches a lot to find references and support for my comments. It was great for that. I suspect, these days, I would find far too much AI and commercialist to make that as stragithforward.

@oldrawgabbit I've gone well out of my way to avoid advertising. (Qwant for searching and I use things like FreeTube for access to Youtube). I'm always floored by how much bullshit non-tech people are willing to accept being flung their way. It's completely intolerable, IMO.

@roknrol i have been using Brave browser which gets rid of many adverts, including on Youtube. But I can't ditch Chrome unfortunately because various things that I need don't work otherwise.

@oldrawgabbit Like I said, "great pains". There was a lot of legwork to get myself out from under the Microsoft/Google monopolies; some of which I've only "sort of" been able to accomplish.

I don't like that I don't have access to the "best" video games, but it beats being advertised to just because I clicked on my start menu. I don't like having to update software every time YouTube changes their algorithms and breaks the software that I use to avoid their advertising, but it beats seeing their advertising.

I don't think that *all* marketing is bad. I will happily watch a YT channel with advertising as part of the video without complaint. But two ads before, two more inserted into the video, and one more just before the end of the video? Fuck a whole bunch of that shit. If I had to watch it, I wouldn't.

@oldrawgabbit i'll be honest, i think that would happen a long time ago, but the tech and the bandwidth weren't available at the time. But now they are.
