thoughts on Argos

Argos is a british catalogue retail business. It has stores where you can order at kiosks, or pick up an order made online / on the kiosks. Each store has a small warehouse area so for selected items you can order on the kiosks and pick up right there with a few minutes of waiting.

i like it. it is like amazon without all the major pain points of amazon.

  • for popular items, most Argos locations would have it in stock, this means same day if not same hour pickup. for argos that doesn’t have your item in stock, they would deliver to that argos, normally the next day
  • each item has a 7 digit article code, which is convenient
  • no third party sellers selling you alphabet soup brand names

Amazon tried something similar in the US, where you order in the app and you can pick up things almost immediately at a location where there’s a row of lockers connected to a small warehouse area in the app. it didn’t work.

@kuriko that's interesting. That kind of reminds me of a local e-shop that has physical locations in major cities and you can order stuff from them either online or from their locations (they aren't really stores, they usually don't have stuff there iirc).
