my work puter always consumes around 10-12gb of ram constantly, how tf do people live with 8?

@ellynelly@void.lgbt my macbook has only 8gb of ram, and idrk how i can manage to live with that ​neocat_woozy​
(but to be more serious, it mostly consumes about 5-6gb of ram with about 1-1,5gb of swap, and i frequently try to close unneeded applications, tabs etc., and it mostly works good, but i unfortunately cant do more advanced stuff smoothly with this macbook like running vms or bigger games :< )

@ellynelly@void.lgbt ok nvm, htop says that i only use about 3gb of ram for some reason, which is strange, since i have about 19 browser tabs open and also 10 applications (mostly lightweight stuff though)

@marcy @ellynelly I have 8 GB of RAM on my machine but most of the time i don't use more than 2-3GB

@marcy i have around 24 tabs open and the consumption is around 9gb lol.

maybe it just uses that much of ram, bcse there's so much available to use, since unused ram is wasted ram or so (i think)

@marcy on my setup, i noticed that macOS uses ~4GB of RAM on idle. But maybe that's because i probably run some other stuff on the background.

why is the result so different than on htop?

@marcy i think htop on macOS doesn't have the same access to the system's resources as the system monitor. So may not be able to display that information correctly.

Usage is usually way less than 8gb for me unless I’m compiling something and such. I use Alpine Linux tho which is very light.
my work puter always consumes around 10-12gb
Lemme guess, it uses Win11.

About this instance

This is an instance based on Akkoma. It's one of the services that comprises the "Fediverse", a network of federated services like Mastodon, Misskey and others. For more information about the Fediverse, you can check out fediverse.party.

The instance is being run by getimiskon and it's a part of their services.

In order to keep the instance sustainable for as long as possible as well as to make easier to deal with moderation, we don't have open registrations. But feel free to ask for an invite.

Important: Some blocklists for ad blocking add-ons may cause issues, like hiding the "Follow" button. It's understandable that you may not want to disable your ad blocker, but make sure to configure it for this instance. This instance does not rely on ads and it will never be.


Rules

The following rules apply on this instance:

  • Don't spam

  • Don't harass anyone inside and outside this instance

  • Don't dox any user (sharing personal information without their consent)

  • Tag NSFW (not safe for work) content accordingly

  • Don't upload any material that includes minors (SFW or not)

  • Avoid posting anything illegal, specifically illegal in Germany, as the server is being hosted there

  • Sexism, racism, fascism and nazism are not welcome here

  • Boosted content is being treated like posts. Don't boost content that breaks this instance's rules

Non-compliance with these rules may result to the termination of your account


Federation Policy

We generally don't want to block instances. Because of the decentralized nature of the Fediverse, there might be content from other instances that don't comply with our rules and might be displayed at the "Known Network" tab. We may remove instances that host those posts from that tab. You will still be able to communicate with people from these instances if you want to.

We may block some instances for the following reasons:

  • Promote fascism, nazism, racism etc.
  • Host NSFW content including minors
  • Instances that are run by corporations who don't support Free Software
  • Instances that cause problems to our users

We also don't block instances for the following reasons:

  • Federation with instances we disagree with
  • Personal issues with the owners of other instances
  • Because a blocklist maintainer told us to do so

If there are any issues or mistakes that we should be aware of, feel free to contact the admin of this instance.


Support

While the server is free to use, unfortunately hosting it is not. In order to continue running it and our services, as well as improving them, support is needed by its users.

You can support the instance and all the services by donating at Liberapay. Keep in mind that donations at Liberapay are recurring, so if you plan to do a one-time donation, it may not be the best option for you.
