Question for those who find piracy immoral:
Are there any examples of times you'd consider it morally acceptable?
For example: I've been wanting to watch an anime from my childhood and I decided I was gonna buy the DVDs, because I wanted good quality.
New dvds can't be found, not all of them.
Preowned have absurd prices, potentially from people that bought them to sell them at higher prices since they are still sealed. Buying those "preowned" ones won't profit anyone who worked on the anime or publishers.

Or another: Old ass videogames that are not sold anymore, again only found pre owned at absurd prices, again no one who worked on the game would see a cent of what you pay those borderline scalpers.

Are those morally acceptable cases for piracy?

@raccoon the only piracy I find immoral is on indie developers. And in some extreme cases, I can justify piracy even there.

If you watch your movies from a streaming site, then you aren't the one doing the pirvacy.

Think smart, outsource your piracy to someone else.

The series I'm looking for is obscure enough by now that even streaming sites don't have it.
Closest I could find was one that didn't have all episodes and the ones they do have are at garbage quality.
I'm talking 80 mega for an episode.

And I'm specifically looking for it in Italian, because nostalgia would hit different if I watched it in a language I didn't as a kid.
I should get the mangas too for the full experience along with the mangas from the same author, like Captain Harlock for example.

Piracy can be immoral depending on context.
For example making a non legal copy of a movie made by a small crew can be immoral, but it also can be considered to be immoral to forcefully comply people to do so via the usage of legal violence.

This ties back to how high trust society degraded and became what it is now.

Piracy can be moral in a context where for example the exchange of goods isn't balanced, for example all proprietary software don't sell a tools, they sell a temporary revocable license which his absolutely disgusting, it's a one sided transaction to which the customer has nothing beside bad habits.

A non legal copy in such case can be justified.

But one can also consider that it can also be immoral to use such proprietary software if it's widespread enough for people to be dependent on it for their work.

As it's forces the users and apprentices to learn specific muscle memories for it's usage thus making it hard for freedom respective alternative to be migrated too.

Hard not only because it can be visually very different but also not as complete since it did not receive initial financing's as the proprietary software one did.

Financing's that users might not be used to do if their have the habit to use "pirated" copies. Thus they indirectly create their own issue.

>Are those morally acceptable cases for piracy?
Yes they are. If the product isn't legally manufactured anymore it's morally ok, even more when you know that the prices are artificially jacked up to create a bubble.

@raccoon >Question for those who find piracy immoral:
Piracy is immoral, as theft, murder and kidnap etc with the help of a boat is immoral.

Sharing generally useful information with your neighbors is always moral, although it may not be legal.

@mangeurdenuage >For example making a non legal copy of a movie made by a small crew can be immoral
I don't see why sharing a copy of a movie you paid for with your neighbors would be immoral if it was made by a small crew instead of a large crew.

You're effectively advertising the movie to others, who may choose to send a payment to the small crew for the movie, or pass it onto someone else who may do so.

No, it’s factually illegal but the morality of it is up to debate.

Depending on the situation and the country you are in, unauthorized copying may not be illegal.

In most countries, merely downloading a copyrighted file is not illegal, although providing it for download in violation of its license is.

Well yeah fair enough, some countries are a bit more relaxed. But can you actually call it piracy if it's legal?

It's a context issue.
Same issue applies with stealing, is it morally ok to steal food or medication when you are starving/dying of a disease ?
