random discovery: .eu exists as a TLD because the EU passed a law saying it should, without really asking ICANN first

@q what are they gonna do, pick a fight with the EU?

@q is it considered a ccTLD? (I guess I could see arguments either way)

@q I once heard about someone from the IT department of the commission being asked by a certificate authority for the founding documents of the legal entity they were trying to get a certificate for. They replied that the maastricht treaty is available in bookshops.
I don’t know how if that worked.

@q an additional fun fact: there are two .eu TLDs. The normal with a normal e and a normal u and .ευ with a Greek e and u.

@q or well.. I suppose not a country and thus not a ccTLD, which makes for an interesting exception for two-letter implying ccTLD

@firefly @q Its a ccTLD per IANA terminology, even though EU isn’t a country (It’s “Exceptionally Reserved” in ISO 3166-1)

@q they ought to know they can't win that one

@firefly @q there are ccTLDs for plenty of non-independent colonies, e.g. .pr for Puerto Rico, .ky for the Cayman Islands, or .yt for Mayotte.

Those are actual country codes though, not exceptionally reserved like eu

@q imagine though if they hadn't given up. the EU would end up setting up their own ICANN...

@dysfun @q ngl a timeline where this has happened would be interesting as this propably would have kick started some interesting dns developments neobot_owo

@16af93 @dysfun @q they should have called it “ICANN’t deal with this bureaucratic nightmare anymore”

@FlorianTischner ok, what the hell is that? the greek for ".eu" should have been ".εε" and not ".ευ", it doesn't make sense. neocat_googly_shocked

@q first, estonia doesn't use the greek script, so that's bullshit and second, icann can kiss my ass
