The absolute POWER TRIP that is getting your services up and public with DynDNS, mTLS, ACME certs, and subdomain-based routing.

@arichtman i wish i could actually self-host something (so far the only thing i managed to do was an onionsite)

@getimiskon you can totally do it! An onion site sounds complicated! Is there something holding you back?

@arichtman i'm pretty sure i could set it up, but the lack of a dedicated machine to use as a server and having an unreliable internet connection aren't really helpful. That's the reason why i use a VPS.
As for the onion site, it's not that hard. You just need to configure Tor a bit to make it work.

@getimiskon can't do much about the internet connection but you can use pretty much any old machine for a server? There's someone here who was hosting their web site off an old mobile phone lol
There's also a fedi instance that's running on someone's router lol

@arichtman I need another solar panel or two to keep the server running, but I did have DynDNS figured out.,

@ohmrun I'm just getting deeper and deeper into the hole. I was noodling about proper HA like a redundant WAN link and a warm/hot failover box...
Damn infra-brain

@arichtman the thing is that other than my phone and my laptop, i don't really have any functioning computers i could use as servers. I actually have some parts from my old computer (the motherboard, the CPU and a couple sticks of RAM), but i don't know if it's functional or not. i've been told it's not, but it looks alright. But if i get it to work again, i already know what i'll use it for.

@getimiskon people told me about cheap second hand office PCs and I use these now. Government sells them by the hundreds when they refresh hardware over here

@arichtman yeah... maybe i could get some hardware, but i don't have the money for it. Paying for the cheap VPS is already enough for me. Also i don't really have space for one. Yeah... neocat_floof_sad
