WHY BLUESKY WILL FAIL
(Not a thread - because we don't have unrealistic character limits on this server)
I've been silent about #Bluesky, while I've seen other people on the #Fediverse show interest through the recent months, even get excited about the new "decentralized" entry. Here are some thoughts on that.
First of all, Bluesky's "decentralization" is bs. The ATproto was designed in a way that only huge companies with big money can control the infrastracture/relays. The so-called Personal Data Servers are not an actual decentralization - basically what they do is lessen the running expenses for Bluesky. You don't regain control of your social media experience, you're just saving them money on their network.
But that's not the reason I think Bluesky will fail in becoming the next Twitter, which seems to be the obvious goal. If anything, those who enjoyed Twitter will probably enjoy more a centralized service, like Bluesky is.
The reason it will fail is that people who are looking for the next Twitter are chasing their tails. The best service in being Twitter is... Twitter. The next Twitter is X. We had that. And it was a toxic place run by billionaires long before Musk came along.
So no matter how much people go around and try other services like Mastodon or Bluesky, if they are looking for "the twitter experience" they will always be disappointed after a while and return to the source. These mainstream platforms are addictive like drugs. People there are addicted to the big audience, to the confrontations, to who will steal the spotlight with the most smart-ass comment. After a while they'll realize that Bluesky doesn't even come close to giving them that rush.
And, if people tried the Fediverse, which is self-organized to a wide extent and a place that they could really feel that belongs to them instead of some CEO, and most of them didn't stick here, it will be way easier for them to return from the company Bluesky to the company X. Bluesky's funders Blockchain even funded politicians, mostly republicans. So there aren't even serious ideological reasons to keep them there instead of X. Musk is more openly promoting fascism, but the money behind both companies are fine with -and actively support- Republicans. So even for Democrats the difference will start getting hard to see. If anything, from this point of view, Bluesky is more of an excuse to go back to X, than something radically different.
And when most people leave Bluesky, you'll see that all the "Mastodon is confusing!" complaints were mostly excuses. If you actually want to be here, you'll figure it out, it's not rocket science.
I know Bluesky is trendy and "all the rage" these days, but give it some time. I'm not saying it won't have its audience, but I'm willing to bet that anyone who thinks it will surpass X anytime soon will be disappointed - and will probably run back to X, if they ever left. I won't be surprised if it faces financial trouble soon - and even if Musk ends up buying it at some point just for a laugh, definitely sounds like something he would do. And it would be something Bluesky users might deserve, for leaving one company to trust and support another. Some people never learn.
The challenge is not to rebuild Twitter somewhere else. It is to build something else. Something better. I'm really, really glad that the Fediverse did not end up being "the next Twitter". Because it is, and will be even more, something much deeper and more meaningful than that.
